Fang Yuan, who also goes by Michael, joined ESPN in July 2016 as a senior editor for ESPN.com. He brings his expertise and influence within China’s sports industry to his role at ESPN’s longtime collaboration with Tencent, China’s leading Internet company and one of the top Internet and technology companies in the world. He also serves as a sideline reporter for NBA live broadcasts that is exclusively distributed and promoted by Tencent’s digital platforms in China via QQ Sports. Yuan is bilingual, and provides coverage in both Mandarin and English.
Yuan began his sports journalism career in his native China, where he worked for Sina.com from 2008 to 2010. He covered major sports events in China before coming to U.S., and assumed a leadership role continuing to help Sina.com expand its NBA coverage in U.S by coordinating the U.S-based reporters’ network that covered the Minnesota Timberwolves, as well as a variety of NBA games and major NBA events from 2010 to 2016. Yuan is well-known for his basketball writing and reporting among Chinese fans. Yuan was also a college basketball player himself at Northwest University in China, and played at CUBA (Chinese University Basketball Association) from 2004 to 2006.
Aside from his role at ESPN, Yuan also manages a personal blog in Chinese, in which he discusses his family life in the U.S, among other social topics. He obtained his Bachelors of Arts degrees in Chinese Language and Literature, and Journalism, as well as a Master of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature from Northwest University. Additionally, he holds a Master of Education degree from Northwest Nazarene University. He currently resides in Southington, Connecticut with his family.
