Editor-in-Chief, ESPN India & South Asia
Sambit Bal is the Editor-in-Chief, ESPN India/South Asia. Since taking the role in December 2015, he oversees all editorial content (written, video and audio) across ESPN’s multisport site and app in India, as well as all ESPNcricinfo content globally.
Additionally, Bal plays a leading role in growing ESPN’s global coverage of tennis and is instrumental in the development of ESPNcricinfo programming initiatives for television on SONY ESPN channels as part of the company’s multi-year agreement with Sony Pictures Networks in India.
Bal reports to Ramesh Kumar, Vice President & Head of ESPN India & South Asia and Patrick Stiegman, Vice President, Global Content, ESPN Digital & Print Media.
Prior to this role Bal was Editor of ESPNcricinfo since 2004. Under his leadership the site defined its distinct voice, establishing ESPNcricinfo as the most trusted and comprehensive source for news, commentary, analysis and information around the sport of cricket — reaching millions of fans around the world every day.
Prior to joining ESPNcricinfo, Bal worked at Wisden and was the founding editor of Wisden Asia Cricket. Before Wisden, Bal spent 15 years in mainstream journalism working at some of India’s leading publications and media outlets, where he covered crime, urban development and politics, and edited Gentleman, a monthly features magazine.
He remains one of the most lucid and influential writers in the sport of cricket globally and is based in ESPN’s Mumbai office.
