ESPN Caribbean Presents Michael Holding Exclusive
Windies legend and ESPN Match Point analyst, Michael Holding, analyzes the West Indies route to the quarter-finals of the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
Holding on the mindset against UAE…
They (WI) got the end-result which was winning the game. I’m not absolutely sure though about the process. They got four early wickets, had UAE 46/6, which was a fantastic position, and then when Javed and Aziz (UAE) had that partnership going they sort of lost interest. They were just waiting on things to just happen instead of going out there and making them happen. I’m not too sure they learnt too much from this game.
Holding on West Indies’ batting…
This is the World Cup. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing. You may get the end-result that you want but there has to be the correct process. I’m not too sure what the thought-process was to send in Andre Russell when they sent him out to bat. What for? They started out needing five runs an over and in modern One-Day cricket, that’s not difficult. When Andre Russell went out to bat, they needed about four runs per over or a little bit less. What was the purpose for sending Russell out to hit fours and sixes? Bat sensibly! I’m still not convinced that they approached their batting the way it should have been approached. I saw some shots being played and some tactics being adopted that I didn’t think was necessary. There was no rush! That (chase) was a simple task. Against the UAE it’s even more simple.
Holding on Johnson Charles’ World Cup debut…
He has come into the team and batted quite well, perhaps because he has no baggage. He has nothing worrying him. He just comes into the team as a new, fresh face and he goes out there and he bats. It was refreshing to watch. I would hope that if Chris Gayle is fit for the next game and they decide to play him (Gayle) that Johnson Charles stays in the team. Perhaps they can open the batting and then they (WI) can think about what’s coming afterwards (in the order).
Holding on Jonathan Carter’s half-century…
Jonathan Carter to me, when I saw him in Test matches and looked at him in South Africa, he looked as if he knew pretty much what he was doing. He looked okay. I wouldn’t say he’s going to be a great cricketer or the next star for the West Indies but he looks capable. Coming into the One-Day team, he has sort of faltered a bit. This is the first time he has batted through an innings and looked as if, ‘Yes, I can get some runs at this level’. What these guys all have to do now is when they play New Zealand (in the quarter-final), prove that they can do it against teams like that!
Holding on the improvements required…
Attitude! I would love to see an improvement in that regard. As I said they have a responsibility to the people in the Caribbean and I’ll repeat – if you don’t enjoy working for your employers, move on! Find a new employer. There are other options open today. West Indies Cricket Board is not the only employer available but there are also repercussions for that. West Indies Cricket Board needs to think about that. A lot of these guys are using the WICB to make a name for themselves and move on because they’re not happy. Make them happy.
