Vice President, Creative and Studio Direction
Bob Toms has been vice president, creative and studio direction since 2016, when the studio directing group was added to his oversight as part of creative services. Prior to that, in his role as vice president, production enhancements & interactive TV (2008-16), he oversaw the creative services team as well as those charged with developing production enhancements and ESPN’s interactive television efforts, including video on demand.
Toms joined ESPN in 2006 as vice president, production, overseeing the network’s production business, sales integration and creative content teams. Prior to joining ESPN, Toms was vice president, production at ABC Sports, where his work in sports television began.
He first joined ABC in 1975 as a page while still in college. After graduating from Queens College, he was hired as the theatre manager for the $20,000 Pyramid. Following a two-year stint in network operations, he moved over to ABC Sports in 1981, in the sports operations department. He subsequently took a position in the sports on-air promotion department in 1983, working every facet of sports promotion and ultimately becoming the director of promotion, a position he held until 1994 when he was named creative director of production, ABC Sports. Six years later he was named director of production.
Toms’ work at ABC and ESPN has earned him more than 25 Sports Emmy Award nominations, resulting in 17 Emmy Awards, in addition to two Promax Gold Medals which he received for promotion excellence.
