Chris Herring is a senior writer for ESPN, where he covers the NBA. He officially joined the company in 2024.
As a senior writer, Herring brings a distinctive voice to ESPN’s NBA coverage, often spotlighting the league’s most unusual and entertaining storylines, from on-court quirks to offbeat trends. He also speaks regularly with players and coaches to help explain the game in deeper detail, breaking down complex sequences and team dynamics so fans can better understand what they’re seeing on the court.
Before joining ESPN full-time, Herring served as a senior NBA writer for Sports Illustrated from 2021 to 2023. He previously spent five years at FiveThirtyEight (2016–2021), where his data-driven features and smart analysis earned him regular appearances on SportsCenter and The Jump. He began his journalism career at The Wall Street Journal, covering the NBA from 2009 to 2016.
A Chicago native, Herring graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in political science. He also served as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. In 2022, he became a New York Times bestselling author with Blood in the Garden: The Flagrant History of the 1990s New York Knicks, which was featured on former President Barack Obama’s summer reading list.
Herring lives in New York City with his wife, and enjoys Motown and R&B music, writing, and following Michigan football.
