Senior Coordinating Producer, ESPNEWS

Elida Witthoeft, who joined ESPN in 1998 and has held a series of supervisory and editorial roles in both television and on line, was named senior coordinating producer, ESPNEWS, in December 2009.  She is responsible for the strategic vision and editorial direction of the nation’s only 24-hour all-sports news network.

She previously had served as a senior news editor since September 2005 and also from February 2003 – September 2004.  In that position, she was responsible for the network’s evening and nighttime coverage of breaking news and the coordination of spot news coverage by news editors and the field staff for all studio shows including SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, NFL and NBA studio shows and ESPNEWS.  She also oversaw the day-to-day integration of the newsgathering operation across different entities – ESPN’s television networks, ESPN Radio and ESPN.com.  In addition, Witthoeft was senior manager of ESPN’s 16-person assignment desk.

Witthoeft joined ESPN in 1998 as the only news editor in studio production.  From January 2000 to February 2001, she served as coordinating producer of the award-winning Outside the Lines monthly series, overseeing all aspects of the monthly, one-hour telecasts, from inception to on-air presentation.  Witthoeft served as coordinating producer of the overnight SportsCenter and the Sunday SportsCenter from February 2001 to February 2003. She was responsible for the content and production of the nightly one-hour shows and the morning re-airs.  From September 2004 to September 2005, Witthoeft worked as executive editor at ESPN.com, where she managed the news desk and established a copy desk for the award-winning website.

Prior to joining ESPN, Witthoeft was the pro sports editor at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (1994-1998) and assistant sports editor for the Chicago Tribune (1992-94), where she won the Outstanding Employee Award in 1993.  She was also sports slot editor for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (1992) and Milwaukee Journal (1989-92).  She started her career as a news reporter and editor at the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill. (1981-1989).

Witthoeft, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill., has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where she has also taught editing.
