Major League Baseball Staff Writer
Joon Lee is a Major League Baseball writer for ESPN.com. He regularly hosts BBTN Live (Baseball Tonight Live), ESPN’s streamed pregame show, and has contributed to ESPN’s MLB game telecasts. He has written a variety of pieces exploring topics such as unwritten rules of the game, the rise of MLB’s Ivy League culture and the experience of women in baseball.
Lee was a regular contributor to ESPN’s KBO League coverage in the 2020 season. Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Brookline, Mass., he went to KBO games growing up when visiting family in Seoul.
“It was an incredibly fulfilling experience to cover one of the only sports leagues in the world operating at the start of the COVID pandemic while also sharing my experience with Korean culture with the ESPN audience,” Lee described about the 2020 KBO League season.
Watching Boston’s sports teams win championships during his formative years fostered Lee’s love for sports. In grade school, he brought the sports section of the Boston Globe and Boston Herald to show-and-tell to describe game stories and scores, inspiring him to pursue a career in the industry.
Prior to ESPN, Lee covered the NFL, NBA, MLB, sneakers, fashion, pop culture and the Olympics at Bleacher Report. He also worked for The Washington Post and Boston Herald and has had bylines in The Ringer, SB Nation and The Hardball Times. In 2018, Lee was named a Media Rising Star by Folio Magazine.
