Mobile extension launches off the heels of ESPN Local’s best month ever in July

ESPN’s six local-based apps for the iPhone and iPod touch have all launched and are now available on iTunes.  The five ESPN Local apps give fans in Dallas, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York a mobile platform to access all the latest breaking news, scores and information from their hometown teams.  Additionally, ESPN Passport allows fans to chronicle their at-the-game experiences by building a digital sports scrapbook via the app on their mobile devices while also capturing real-time perspective with the ability to “check-in,” upload photos and share commentary while at the game.

ESPN Local

All five ESPN Local apps are free to download, giving fans instant access to breaking local news, hometown team information, local writers, bloggers and a custom local SportsCenter.  An easy to navigate rotating carousel that allows users to flip through the content at their fingertips mimic the top stories of each local site homepage.  Other features include:

  • Top local and national news stories;
  • GPS-activated local weather updates;
  • Blog posts and tweets from each of the local contributors to the sites;
  • Interactive scoreboard;
  • Access to local SportsCenter video and audio clips;
  • Stadium guides for all local professional sports teams;
  • Schedules;
  • Text direct to ESPN Radio stations in Dallas, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York;
  • Live digital audio from the ESPN Radio stations;
  • In-app purchase opportunities.

The launch of all five apps comes off the heels of ESPN Local’s best month ever online.  Collectively, the sites reached 5.7 million unique visitors and generated 45 million total minutes.

ESPN Passport

The ESPN Passport app – also free to download – allows fans to commemorate their at-the-game experiences by checking in at the game based on geo-location.  Fans can upload their own photos, seat location, and comments while sharing with friends via social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.  Fans will compete to become the Captain of their favorite team by checking in at the most games throughout the year.  This will in turn allow ESPN to aggregate user-generated content from sporting events and feature the story of the game from the fan’s perspective on ESPN.com.
