ESPN Presents World Football Challenge 2011

All 14 Matches; Live Comprehensive News and Information Coverage on ESPN Deportes

ESPN will present comprehensive coverage of World Football Challenge 2011, the summer series of 14 matches in the U.S. featuring many of the world’s top international soccer clubs in round robin matches (July 13 – Aug. 6).  ESPN networks – ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, ESPN3.com, ESPN 3D, ESPN International, ESPN UK and ESPN Deportes Radio – will combine to present live all 14 matches beginning today at 8 p.m. ET, with New England Revolution vs. Manchester United (ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, ESPN3.com), from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

The World Football Challenge teams include reigning Barclays Premier League champion Manchester United; Spain’s 2010-2011 La Liga champions and UEFA Champions League title holders Barcelona; 2011 FA Cup winners Manchester City FC; Spain’s 2011 Copa del Rey champion Real Madrid; Major League Soccer’s 2010 regular season winner, Los Angeles Galaxy; legendary Italian Serie A club Juventus; popular Mexican Primera Division teams C.D. Guadalajara and Club América; Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, Vancouver Whitecaps and Philadelphia Union; and Portugal’s Primeira Liga’s Sporting CP.

Highlights of ESPN’s World Football Challenge schedule:

  • ESPN Deportes will televise 11 matches including matchups featuring Manchester United, Real Madrid, C.D Guadalajara, Club América, and Barcelona;
  • ESPN2 will present nine matches highlighted by Barcelona vs. Manchester United on Saturday, July 30, a repeat of the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final, live from FedEx Field in Landover, Md.; 
  • ESPN will show two matches including Barcelona vs. Club América live from Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday, Aug. 6, at 4 p.m.;
  • Others networks – ESPN International (6), ESPN 3D (2), and ESPN UK (3) – will combine to air World Football Challenge matches to their respective audience;
  • ESPN3.com, the broadband sports network available in more than 75 million homes, will televise 13 of the 14 matches;
  • ESPN Deportes Radio, the Spanish-language sports radio network, will broadcast five matches.

News and Information

In addition to live match telecasts, ESPN Deportes, ESPN’s Spanish-language sports network, will anchor the company’s news and information coverage of the series.  Highlights:

  • Fuera de Juego, ESPN Deportes’ soccer studio show co-hosted by Argentine World Cup legend Mario Kempes and ESPN Deportes soccer commentator Fernando Palomo, will offer a special edition on Saturday, July 16, originating from site at the Los Angeles Coliseum when David Beckham and LA Galaxy host Real Madrid, led by  Cristiano Ronaldo;
  • Fútbol Picante, the highest-rated soccer news program in Mexico, also aired on ESPN Deportes, will provide on-site coverage of the Barcelona – Club América match live from Cowboys Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 6, beginning at 3 p.m. ET, with co-hosts Jose Ramon Fernandez, Rafa Puente (former player and coach) and Ciro Procuna;
  • ESPN Deportes SportsCenter will provide additional news and information coverage.
