ESPN’s Sixth Jimmy V Week Sets Fundraising Record: Nearly $1.6 Million

ESPN’s sixth Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research set a fundraising record by generating nearly $1.6 million  ($1,591,108) in contributions for The V Foundation for Cancer Research during the month of December – surpassing the previous record of $1,301,530 set in 2011. In six years, Jimmy V Week has generated $6,761,437 in total contributions for The V Foundation for Cancer Research.

The record-setting total was announced by Susan Braun, Chief Executive Officer, The V Foundation, and John Skipper, President, ESPN.

“We are so grateful for our relationship with ESPN,” said Braun. “The support that we feel throughout their organization and fan base is helping us fulfill our mission to put an end to cancer through funding research.”

“It’s phenomenal what our employees have achieved,” said Skipper. “Their dedication with the generosity of our fans forms one of the best teams in sports.”

Prior to the launch of Jimmy V Week, ESPN announced a $1 million contribution to The V Foundation Endowment Fund. The sixth Jimmy V Week initiative from Nov. 27 – Dec. 4 featured a simulcast of Jim Valvano’s iconic 1993 ESPYS speech across ESPN domestic networks, and programming throughout the week of special content and messaging across ESPN domestic platforms to drive donations. The V Foundation awards 100 percent of cash donations directly to cancer research.

About The V Foundation for Cancer Research

The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993, The Foundation has awarded more than $100 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide. It awards 100 percent of all direct cash donations and net proceeds of events directly to cancer research and related programs. Administrative and fundraising expenses are paid by the Foundation’s endowment. The Foundation awards grants through a competitive awards process strictly supervised by a Scientific Advisory Board.
