@ESPNTennis: Sony Open in Miami Championships this Weekend; No. 1 Williams & No. 2 Li to Play for Women’s Title

The ATP and WTA tennis action at the Sony Open in Miami concludes this weekend – the first time on the ESPN networks — with the Women’s Championship on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and the Men’s Championship on Sunday, March 30, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.  All matches are also available online and on mobile devices via WatchESPN.

Cliff Drysdale and Mary Joe Fernandez will call the action on the women’s side, with Darren Cahill on the sideline.  Chris Fowler will handle play-by-play for the men’s final alongside Cahill, with Brad Gilbert reporting.

The Women’s Championship will showcase a matchup between the world’s top-ranked players: No. 1 Serena Williams vs. No. 2 Li Na. Williams surpassed No. 4 Maria Sharapova in Thursday’s semifinal in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), while Li needed three sets to overcome No. 10 Dominika Cibulkova (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) to set up the 12th meeting between the 32-year-old players.  Williams leads the series 10-1 and has won the last nine matchups.

Williams, the defending Sony Open champion, will seek her second title of the year and the 59th overall of her career.  The world’s top player has reached more finals (9) at the Sony Open than in any other tournament and has won the event six times.  Li, the reigning Australian Open champion, is the first Chinese player to reach the Sony Open Championship, and will be playing for her 10th career title.

The men’s final will be determined at the conclusion of today’s second semifinal.  Novak Djokovic advanced to the Championship after Japan’s Kei Nishikori withdrew from their semifinal due to injury. In the second match, Rafael Nadal will face Tomas Berdych (7 p.m., ESPN) to potentially set up a Championship between world No. 1 Nadal and No. 2 Djokovic.

It was 32 years at ESPN for me as of November 2018 (the only job I’ve ever had) after joining merely to help with the America’s Cup for three months at a robust $5.50 per hour. I like to say I simply kept showing up. I’ve worked on almost every sport, plus answered viewer calls and letters (people used to write!), given tours, written the company newsletter and once drove NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon to the local airport. My travels have been varied…I’ve been to Martinsville and Super Bowls; the America’s Cup (all 3) in San Diego and College GameDay in the sport’s meccas such as Eugene, Auburn, Lubbock, Stillwater and more; the NBA Finals and Indy 500; Wimbledon (16 times and counting) and the “other Bristol,” the one with a race track in Tennessee. These days, in addition to overseeing the Fan Relations, Archives and ESPNPressRoom.com, my main areas are tennis, ratings, and corporate communications documents, including ESPN’s history and growth.
