Up-and-Coming Lightweight Karl Dargan to Meet Tony Luis on ESPN Friday Night Fights and Noche de Combates

The January 30 edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra and ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra will feature undefeated lightweight Karl “Dynamite” Dargan (17-0, 9 KOs) and veteran Tony “Lightning” Luis (18-2, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Friday’s show from Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., will air live at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2, broadband Spanish-language ESPN Deportes+ and WatchESPN. ESPN Deportes will televise Friday’s fights on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. The card is presented by Main Events.
Commentators:
Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will be ringside with analyst Teddy Atlas describing the action for ESPN2. Delvin Rodríguez and Alex Pombo will call the fights for Noche de Combates (Fight Night) on both ESPN Deportes and ESPN Deportes+, while Leopoldo González and Claudia Trejos will anchor the studio. Bilingual reporter Bernardo Osuna (@osunaespn) will present live interviews and reports for both shows.
Main Event:
Philadelphia’s Dargan is coming off a fifth-round TKO win over Angino Perez, while Canada’s Luis is looking to continue his winning ways after scoring an eight-round unanimous decision win over previously undefeated Wanzell Ellison.
“Karl has a tough fight on his hands. I like this kid Tony Luis,” said Dargan’s trainer, Naazim Richardson. “This kid (Luis) doesn’t back down for anybody. You have to be leery, too, because he likes to lead with that head – he’s got that Tim Bradley lead.”
Luis said of Friday’s fight, “I think Dargan is a very good fighter. I think he’s got very good skills, fast hands, and he’s a good counterpuncher. If you make too many mistakes, he can make you pay. One thing I’ve always been good at doing is assessing my opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. My team is always able to put together a good game plan to neutralize the fighter’s strengths while employing our own strengths.”
Co-Feature:
Friday’s eight-round middleweight co-feature will pit “The Haitian Sensation” Russell Lamour (14-4, 4 KOs) against Thomas “The Souljah” Falowo (12-3, 8 KOs). In his last bout, Maine’s Lamour scored an eight-round unanimous decision win over Ashandi Gibbs, while Falowo, of Rhode Island, is looking to rebound from a seventh-round TKO loss to Ronald Gavril.
