Longhorn Network Commemorates Black History Month with Special Programming

Fifty-eight years ago, nine African American students integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, testing the landmark 1954 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education that declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

Facing a hostile crowd, those teenagers – escorted by the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne – marched up the steps and into the history books. Their courage echoed across the country, and six decades later, remains a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement.

During February 2015, Longhorn Network commemorates Black History Month with a special telecast of the LBJ Library’s “Reflections on Race.” In an evening with three members of the “Little Rock Nine,” Ernest Green, Carlotta Walls LaNier, and Terrence Roberts recount their most personal experiences and share their reflections on race in America, then and now. This timely program is set to debut on February 10, 8 p.m. CT, with additional airings scheduled throughout the month.

LHN will also debut “Through the Eyes of Texas: Integration” on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 8:30 p.m.  In this half-hour special, Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams looks back at how the state’s flagship university responded to integration.

Through exclusive interviews from former students, historians, faculty and staff, this program uncovers compelling stories of UT’s desegregation and explores how the university community both influenced and responded to major historic events during that time.
