ESPN’s 2017 MLB Global Game Series Begins with a Focus on Puerto Rico for Astros-Marlins

  • Matchup Features Puerto Rican Players Carlos Correa, Carlos Beltrán and Bench Coach Alex Cora
  • Guests Include: Bengie Molina, Tony Pérez and Iván Rodríguez
  • The State of Youth Baseball in Puerto Rico will be Highlighted During the Telecast

ESPN’s Global Game series, which celebrates various cultural influences on the game of baseball, returns Monday, May 15 with a special episode of Monday Night Baseball presented by USAA: The Miami Marlins and Giancarlo Stanton host the Houston Astros and Carlos Correa at Marlins Park in Miami, Fla., at 7 p.m. ET. on ESPN. The May 15 Global Game will focus on Puerto Rico. The game will feature Puerto Rican players Correa and Carlos Beltrán as well as current Astros bench coach and former ESPN analyst Alex Cora among others. Cora also managed the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic.

Commentators

Karl Ravech will have the call of the full-national telecast with analyst Eduardo Pérez and reporter Pedro Gomez. Eduardo Pérez was raised in Puerto Rico. His coaching career there includes being named the 2008 manager of the year in the Puerto Rico Baseball League and winning two Puerto Rico Winter League Championships.

Bengie Molina and Tony Pérez, the father of Eduardo Pérez, will visit the trio in the booth during the telecast. Molina’s 13-year MLB career included two Gold Glove awards and a 2002 World Series Championship with the now Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Tony Pérez was born in Cuba, but moved to his adopted home of Puerto Rico at age 23. After his historic playing career he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000. Iván Rodríguez, will also join the telecast via phone. The former catcher played 21 years of Major League Baseball and will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame this year.

Additional production highlights for Global Game Puerto Rico

  • Gomez will interview Beltrán as part of ESPN’s Béisbol Experience.
  • Footage from Puerto Rico will be shown of Beltrán’s Baseball Academy and additional youth baseball with children ages 5-8;
  • An elite tournament for high school seniors, Tourneo Excelencia Víctor Pellot, will be showcased as well as an AA league game between Las Piedras vs Juncos;
  • Scenic shots across Puerto Rico will also be shown throughout the night.

The 2017 ESPN Global Game series will include additional telecasts announced at a later date. In addition, Monday’s Global Game will air on ESPN Deportes and ESPN platforms (digital and linear TV) throughout Latin America, Brazil, the Caribbean and Pacific Rim.
