Randolph Childress is a college basketball game analyst for ESPN networks, including ACC Network, bringing the perspective of a Wake Forest legend who also spent nine seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He has worked as an analyst since the 2021-22 season, primarily calling ACC games, and also contributes to The Field of 68.
Childress played at Wake Forest from 1991-95 and finished his career with 2,208 points, second most in school history behind Dickie Hemric, and a school-record 329 3-pointers. A three-time All-ACC selection, he was named ACC Athlete of the Year in 1995 after one of the greatest performances in conference history. He scored 107 points in three games to set an ACC Tournament record, was named tournament MVP and hit the game-winning jumper in overtime against North Carolina to lead the Demon Deacons to their first ACC title since 1962.
Wake Forest retired Childress’ No. 22 in 2013. He was named to the ACC’s 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team in 2002 and inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. Selected 19th overall by Detroit in the 1995 NBA Draft, he went on to a 16-year professional career that included three seasons in the NBA and 13 overseas.
Childress returned to Wake Forest in 2012 as director of player development and was promoted to assistant coach in 2013, later rising to associate head coach before stepping away from the staff in 2021. A 1995 graduate with a degree in communication, he is the father of Brandon Childress, who also played at Wake Forest.
