The concept behind ESPN’s 2026-27 NHL Opening Night sizzle, Leap of Faith, grew out of a childhood hockey memory for Emmy award-winning Producer Mike Farrell, who also directed and edited the piece.
“The idea stemmed from my own experience growing up playing the game in Canada,” Farrell said. “As a kid, I just wanted to jump over the boards like the older kids and like my idols in the NHL. When I was finally able to do it, I felt like a real hockey player.”
Farrell viewed that simple hockey rite of passage as a metaphor for new beginnings and the risks that come with taking a leap. To bring the idea to life, he filmed young hockey players at a rink in Hamburg, New York, while gathering sound and images from NHL players at the NHL Player Media Tour in Las Vegas.
“I was heartened to hear that many players viewed the milestone of jumping the boards with the same nostalgia and meaning that I did,” Farrell said.
The finished piece connects those childhood moments with some of hockey’s biggest celebrations. Farrell points to the contrast between young players trying to clear the boards and NHL players doing the same while celebrating a Stanley Cup championship as the emotional centerpiece of the story.
“Those two visuals drove the emotion of the whole thing, and I hope told a story of childhood dreams coming true, with an unexpected twist,” Farrell said.
“We are so grateful for Farrell’s hockey passion,” shared Vice President of Production Linda Schulz. “With it, we get to experience his ability to find a unique story and bring it to life through beautiful camera angles and shot selections, engaging edit pacing, and sound design and selection. It is truly a gift to our NHL coverage. Kevin Davies and his team’s support of these projects makes all this possible.”
Another key component arrived just hours before the piece aired when actor Liam Neeson recorded the narration.
“We recorded it just a couple hours before the piece ran, so it was a little stressful putting it all together in the final moments before puck drop,” Farrell said. “That said, it was beyond worth it. His voice elevated the piece tremendously.”
For Farrell, the response has been especially rewarding with the sizzle garnering over 5M views on social media in less than 12 hours.
“I am just glad that the story has resonated with so many, within the hockey world and beyond,” he said. “Also, my son thinks I am cool for the time being, so that is a huge win!”
Managing Producer Kevin Davies and Sr. Production Coordinator Camille Bova also contributed to the project.
