On Sunday, June 25, 1978, Mario “El Matador” Kempes turned in one of the most magical performances in a World Cup final at El Monumental in Buenos Aires.
The then-23-year-old midfielder led the Argentina National Team to its first World Cup title, scoring two goals in a 3-1 final match victory against Netherlands. Kempes finished the tournament as the leading scorer with six goals – winning the Golden Ball (best player) and Golden Boot (top scorer) awards.
