The latest SEC Storied: “SEVENTEEN Presented by Southwest Airlines”, tells the story of Tamaurice “Tee” Martin and the team that refused to let outside expectations define them. The film, directed by Spencer Barry, debuts Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. ET on SEC Network following the Tennessee-Auburn women’s soccer game.

In 1998, the Tennessee Volunteers shocked the college football world, completing a perfect 13-0 season and capturing the inaugural BCS National Championship. At the center of it all was No. 17 – a quarterback many believed could never replace the man who came before him.

“The seed for SEVENTEEN was planted while I was producing another SEC Storied film, True Character, about Brandon Burlsworth and his time at Arkansas,” said Barry. “In that story, you feel the heartbreak of Arkansas’ loss to Tennessee after the famous ‘Stoernover’ fumble. But that’s the beauty of sports – the same moment can be heartbreaking from one perspective and the beginning of something remarkable from another.”

After patiently waiting for his opportunity, Tee inherited the impossible task of replacing Peyton Manning and leading one of college football’s most storied programs. As the nation questioned whether Tennessee could remain a championship contender, Martin found himself at the center of the skepticism.

What emerged was more than a football team, it was a brotherhood forged by doubt. While the outside world fixated on what Tennessee had lost, the Volunteers chose to focus on what they still had. Though Tee carried the greatest scrutiny, that belief in one another fueled an underdog mentality that turned doubt into belief – and belief into history.

“Looking more closely at Tennessee’s entire 1998 season, from the uncertainty surrounding the team to their ultimate championship, I was amazed by the layers of their story and the almost improbable series of events that unfolded,” said Barry. “The more I learned, the more I wanted to understand Tee Martin and the journey that had prepared him for that moment.”

For Tee, resilience had been forged long before he arrived in Knoxville. Growing up in Mobile, Alabama’s Birdsville housing projects, he witnessed firsthand the challenges that altered the course of too many young lives. But with the unwavering support of his family and the strength of a close-knit community that believed in his potential, Tee found purpose through athletics, creating opportunities for himself where so many others had been denied the chance. Those experiences shaped the leader his teammates would trust when the stakes were at their highest.

“The more time I spent with Tee and the people who know him best, the more I understood why he was uniquely prepared for that moment,” said Barry. “So much of who Tee is can be traced back to his family and the people in his community who helped raise him. You see their influence in the humility, selflessness and loyalty he carries with him today.”

Through intimate interviews, rare archival footage and personal reflections, SEVENTEEN reveals the untold story behind one of the SEC’s most unforgettable championship seasons. More than the story of replacing a legend, it is about what happens when a team stops chasing someone else’s legacy and begins writing its own. Today, the number 17 stands as more than a jersey – it represents the quarterback, the brotherhood and the championship season that forever changed Tennessee football.

“Tee is impossible not to root for. He’s the kind of person you’d drop everything to help, because you know he would do exactly the same for you,” said Barry. “He never viewed 1998 as his opportunity to prove he could be Peyton Manning. He was confident in who he was, what he could bring to that team, and his ability to lead them in his own way. That distinction says so much about who Tee Martin is, and it became an incredibly important part of the story we wanted to tell.”
