Dave Wilson
College Football Reporter
Dave Wilson is a national reporter for ESPN focused on the Big 12, the SEC and college football across the state of Texas, particularly the people and culture that make the sport so special and unique.
Wilson, who joined ESPN in 2010, is an experienced editor, reporter, art director and designer who’s been a part of award-winning staffs at ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com, the San Diego Union-Tribune, The Dallas Morning News and four other Texas newspapers.
Since February 2020, Wilson has covered college football while based in Austin, Texas.
Previously, Wilson served as a Senior Editor at ESPN.com and ESPN The Magazine for four years (2016-20). A member of the staff that earned the National Magazine Award for General Excellence, Wilson edited national writers and columnists for college football, while also writing magazine and digital features.
Before his promotion to Senior Editor, Wilson served as General Editor, College Sports from June 2013 through February 2016, where he edited ESPN’s national college football writers and Big 12 reporters. He also worked as an editor on ESPN’s dearly departed Page 2, ESPN.com’s pop culture/sports section, from September 2010 to June 2013. As Page 2 editor, Wilson identified and recruited freelance writers, edited comedy/entertainment writers, oversaw ESPN’s music blog, and more.
Prior to joining ESPN, Wilson spent more than 15 years as a designer, sports editor, or copy editor at newspapers in Dallas, Houston, San Diego and Las Vegas. Dave won more than a dozen awards from the Society for News Design for his design and art direction work.
A member of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), Wilson’s exceptional work has been recognized in the FWAA’s annual writing contest on multiple occasions. He won first place in the Column category in 2022 for his piece on the history of college football conference lame ducks, and what it meant for Texas and Oklahoma. The year before, he won for Best Feature for his story on college football legend Earl Campbell’s undiagnosed stenosis and how he may not have been able to play football today. In 2024, he won third place for a feature on Hal Mumme’s Air Raid revolution and the characters who popularized it, like Mike Leach.
A native of Kilgore, Texas, Wilson attended Texas A&M, Kilgore College and the University of Texas at Arlington.
