David Purdum reports on the business side of the sports betting industry for ESPN. His written work appears in the ESPN Chalk gambling vertical of ESPN.com and he also appears frequently on Daily Wager, the network’s daily sports betting news and information television show, and on ESPN’s Outside the Lines.
Purdum, who joined ESPN in 2014, has covered the sports betting industry since 2008. His past work has included profiling renowned professional sports bettor Billy Walters and extensive coverage of New Jersey’s court battles with the sports leagues. His network of sources ranges from Las Vegas and UK bookmakers to underground bookies, politicians, sports league executives, attorneys and gamblers.
In addition to multiple ESPN and ABC platforms, Purdum’s work has appeared in media outlets including the Sporting News, Sports Business Journal, UPI and more. He also previously covered professional, college and high school sports for the Sports Xchange and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was with the AJC from 2005 to 2010 as a web producer and staff writer.
He started his journalism career with the Enid (Oklahoma) News & Eagle as the Oklahoma State football beat writer and columnist. He became the sports editor for Sentry-News in Slidell, La., in 2003.
Purdum is based in Dawsonville, Ga.
