Play-by-Play Commentator

Derek Jones joined ESPN in 2018 and is a play-by-play commentator for college basketball and college baseball.

During his time at ESPN, Jones has covered multiple conferences including the ACC, American, Ivy League, MAAC, MEAC and SWAC, including calling the MAAC, MEAC and SWAC conference championship games. He has also worked on ESPN’s coverage of the NIT since 2021.

Jones has also served as a play-by-play voice for college baseball on ESPN since the 2023 season, working primarily on SEC games. He called two NCAA Tournament Baseball Regionals (’23 Columbia & ’24 Fayetteville) and the SWAC Baseball Championship games in 2023 and 2024.

Jones has served as the play-by-play voice for Princeton men’s basketball since 2012 after previously serving as the voice of Princeton women’s basketball from 2007-12. During his time with the Tigers, he has covered five NCAA tournament teams.

A graduate of Rowan University, Jones currently serves as an adjunct instructor for Sports Broadcasting at his alma mater. During his career that began as an undergraduate at Rowan University, he has also called World TeamTennis, the Division III College World Series and the women’s SWAC Bowling Championship on ESPNU. Jones currently resides in Sewell, N.J.
