SportsCenter Anchor; College Football Studio Host

Matt Barrie, who joined ESPN in March 2013, co-anchors the 2pm ET weekday edition of SportsCenter. Additionally, Barrie hosts SportsCenter on the Road from various locations, including college campuses during football season, College Football Playoffs and National Championship, the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship and more.

In 2019, Barrie’s role expanded as he became the studio host for college football Saturdays. He also serves as the play-by-play voice of ESPN’s Thursday night college football.

During his career, Barrie has received 11 Emmy awards and three Edward R. Murrow journalism awards.

Prior to coming to ESPN, Barrie was an anchor/reporter at KXAS, NBC5 in Dallas (2008-2013) where he hosted weekend sportscasts, including Sunday’s Out of Bounds. He also anchored live coverage of the Cowboys, Rangers and Mavericks, and was recognized with the 2010 national and regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award, five Lonestar Emmy Awards, including Sports Reporter and Sportscast, and the “Salute to Excellence” NABJ Award.

Previously, Barrie was in Columbia, S.C. (2005-08) where he served as sports anchor/reporter for WLTX-TV, and co-hosted the Matt and Tim Show on 1400-AM “The Team,” the highest-rated radio show in the Columbia market. For WLTX he anchored Friday-Monday sportscasts, hosted the weekly Saturday Night Blitz and Gamecock Extra college football shows, and provided live coverage from the Independence Bowl (2005) and Liberty Bowl (2006).

Barrie began his career at WJFW-TV in Wausau, Wisc. (2001-02), where he was the station’s primary Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers reporter. He was also sports host/reporter at KSWO-TV in Lawton, Okla. (2003-05), where he provided live coverage from the 2003 and 2004 Big 12 championship and BCS National Championship games.

During his time at ESPN, Barrie also has hosted College GameDay on ESPN Radio and contributed to ESPN’s XFL coverage as a play-by-play commentator. In 2018, he made his debut as host of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Barrie is a native of Scottsdale, Az., and graduated from Arizona State University with a B.A. in broadcast Journalism from ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2020, he was inducted into the school’s Alumni Hall of Fame.
