Nick Saban
College Football Analyst
Hall of Fame coach Nick Saban, who captured seven national championships during his nearly three-decade college football coaching career, is a college football analyst for ESPN. One of the most accomplished and decorated coaches in history, Saban joined ESPN in February 2024 after retiring from the University of Alabama.
Saban works primarily as an analyst on the set of College GameDay Built by The Home Depot, ESPN’s award-winning weekly college football road show. In addition to appearing on regular season and post-season editions of GameDay, Saban contributes to ESPN’s extensive, multi-day coverage of both the NFL Draft and SEC Media Days, including appearances on SEC Network. Saban is also a recurring weekly guest during the season on The Pat McAfee Show on ESPN platforms.
Over the course of 28 years as a college coach, Saban’s uncompromising dedication to excellence resulted in unprecedented success. He captured seven national championships, including six at Alabama (one at LSU) with a head coaching record of 297-71-1. His teams won 12 conference championships – including 11 SEC titles – and 19 bowl games, and Saban’s teams never had a losing record for a season.
Saban joined Paul “Bear” Bryant as the only two coaches to win five national titles in the modern era. A seven-time National Coach of the Year, Saban achieved resounding success and earned the reputation as an outstanding tactician, leader, organizer and motivator.
In September 2024, Alabama officially dedicated Nick Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa in his honor.
In addition to his 17 years at Alabama (2007-23), Saban also served as head coach at LSU (2000-04), Michigan State (1995-99) and Toledo (1990). He was also head coach of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins (2005-06).
Prior to Michigan State, Saban spent four seasons (1991-94) as defensive coordinator with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns under head coach Bill Belichick.
The winning culture that Saban created also translated to NFL success with a record 49 of his players chosen in the first round of the draft. Two of those players, Mark Ingram II and Bryce Young, helped present Saban with the Icon Award in recognition of his accomplished career at The ESPYS in July 2024.
Saban has co-authored two books – “Tiger Turnaround” in 2001, documenting his first two years at LSU, and “How Good Do You Want to Be?” in 2005, a book that offers real-life principles for success at work and at home.
A native of Fairmont, West Virginia, Saban is a 1973 graduate of Kent State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business. He earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Kent State in 1975.
Saban and his wife Terry have always been focused on helping their local communities throughout his coaching career. Nick’s Kids Foundation has distributed over $13 million to students, teachers and children’s causes at over 150 charities. The Sabans also played a significant role in tornado relief efforts in Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas in 2011, and they have re-built and built 21 homes for families in Alabama through Habitat for Humanity.
