Tim MacMahon

NBA Reporter
Tim MacMahon is a veteran NBA reporter for ESPN, covering the league with a focus on the Western Conference. Based in Dallas, he appears regularly on SportsCenter, NBA Today, and Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast, where he provides reporting, analysis, and storytelling on the players, teams, and personalities that shape the NBA.
MacMahon joined ESPN in 2009 as a reporter for ESPN Dallas, where he covered the Cowboys and Mavericks. When ESPN phased out its local sites, he transitioned to a national NBA beat and has since become one of the most respected voices on the Western Conference, regularly reporting from team markets and playoff series across the country.
Over the years, he has contributed to ESPN’s NBA programming across digital, television, and audio platforms. His podcast presence on The Hoop Collective—where his blend of dry humor, insider insight, and Texas sensibility have made him a fan favorite—has become a regular part of ESPN’s basketball storytelling.
Before ESPN, MacMahon spent six years at The Dallas Morning News (2003–2009), covering high school sports, college athletics, and serving as a sports blogger. He began his career as the North Texas beat writer at the Denton Record-Chronicle from 1999 to 2003.
He is a multiple recipient of Pro Basketball Writers Association awards. His reporting has been recognized for its depth, storytelling, and ability to break down complex league dynamics with clarity and credibility.
MacMahon graduated from the University of North Texas with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 2003.
