Brackets Revealed for 2013 ESPN Regional Television Early-Season Basketball Events

Games set to be shown across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3

ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN, has released the brackets for its owned and operated early-season basketball events beginning in early-November and running through the Christmas holiday. Games are set to be shown across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3, with each tournament available through WatchESPN, accessible online at WatchESPN.com, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app, through ESPN on Xbox LIVE to Gold members and on Apple TV to fans who receive their video subscription from an affiliated provider.

The five multi-day, destination events consisting of the Charleston Classic, Puerto Rico Tip-Off, newly formed Wooden Legacy, Old Spice Classic and the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic are bracket-format tournaments featuring 12 games over three days. The teams compete once per day, advancing with a victory. The two remaining undefeated teams will face off in a championship game.

Charleston Classic – Nov. 21, 22 & 24
Charleston ClassicThe Charleston Classic, held at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C., will include UAB, Clemson, Davidson, Georgia, UMass, Nebraska, New Mexico and Temple. Temple made a NCAA Championship third round appearance last season, while Davidson and New Mexico advanced to the second round. Puerto Rico Tip OffThe Puerto Rico Tip-Off will showcase Charlotte, Florida State, Georgetown, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Michigan, Northeastern and VCU. The entire eight-team field participated in postseason tournaments last season, including Michigan playing for the national title. Wooden Legacy – Nov. 28 & 29, Dec. 1
Wooden LegacyThe newly created Wooden Legacy will be in Orange County, Calif. The first two days will be played on the campus of Cal-State Fullerton and the final day of competition will be at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The field consists of Arizona State, Cal-State Fullerton, Charleston, Creighton, George Washington, Marquette, Miami (Fla.) and San Diego State.

Marquette and Miami played in the NCAA Elite Eight in 2013, while Creighton and San Diego State were third round participants. Additional information, including travel packages, can be found on the Wooden Legacy website.

Three teams advanced to the NCAA Championship in 2013, including Butler to the Sweet 16, Memphis to the third-round and Oklahoma State to the second round. Diamond Head ClassicThe Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, played at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, will include tournament host Hawaii, plus Akron, Boise State, George Mason, Iowa State, Oregon State, Saint Mary’s and South Carolina. Four teams participated in the 2013 NCAA Championship including Akron (second round), Boise State (first round), Saint Mary’s (second round) and Iowa State (third round). Additional early-season events include the second installment of the Armed Forces Classic, which will take place in conjunction with the U.S. Army in a location to be determined. Georgetown will face off against Oregon on Friday, Nov. 8. In its third year, the State Farm Champions Classic will be played at the United Center in Chicago, Ill., on Tuesday, Nov. 12. It will once again showcase Michigan State vs. Kentucky and Kansas vs. Duke. The Jimmy V Men’s & Women’s Classics Presented by Corona Extra  feature a men’s doubleheader and a women’s game on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The men’s event will be held at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden for the 11th consecutive year and 19th overall, and will feature Florida vs. Memphis and Pittsburgh vs. Cincinnati. The women’s event, in its 12th year, will showcase Connecticut at Duke.

The 2012 college basketball events saw great success with top ranked teams in the final Associated Press poll (March 18) on the tournament rosters, including No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 3 Kansas, No. 5 Miami (Fla.), No. 6 Duke, No. 8 Georgetown and No. 9 Michigan State. Eight teams in the final top 25 participated in an ERT basketball event – setting up for an exciting 2013 season.

Rachel Margolis Siegal

A part of the Internal Communications team at ESPN, I began with the network in 2010 as part of the College Sports PR team. Always an avid sports fan and not an athlete – I grew up a huge fan of the Hartford Whalers, while also watching my brother compete at different levels. I became the manager of several high school sports teams and continued that hobby into college. While at Quinnipiac, I worked in the Sports Information Department, which led me to a summer internship at the New Haven Ravens, a AA baseball team, and an eventual job with the Athletic Communications Department at the University of Connecticut. After my five-year stint at Connecticut, I spent six years as Director of Communications at the BIG EAST Conference in Providence, R.I. before joining ESPN.
