ESPN Announces 2013 Fan Hall of Fame Induction Class

Today ESPN announced this year’s inductees for the Fan Hall of Fame. After a 10-day voting period, the three new inductees are: Barbara Rust, “The Sign Lady;” Canaan Sandy and Pierce Wallace, “The Georgia Joker.” They will be honored with their names engraved above three stadium chairs on the lawn of ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., campus at an induction ceremony in 2014.

Each of the three inductees, who were selected by a diverse panel of judges, received more than 85,000 votes on the Fan Hall of Fame website, where public voting took place for 10 days. Additionally, the finalists were each featured in individual 15-second spots across ESPN’s platforms.

“The inductees received outstanding support from their teams, communities and fellow fans throughout the voting period,” said Jeffrey Gonyo, senior director of sports marketing at ESPN. “We look forward to bringing Barbara, Canaan and Pierce to our headquarters to honor their passion and dedication.”

Some additional information on each of the inductees:

Barbara Rust, famously known as “The Sign Lady” in the Sacramento community, has been to every single Sacramento Kings game since she and her family moved to the city in 1985. Rust has supported the team vigorously, despite her current battle with breast cancer, and is described by fellow Kings’ fans as the “heart of our fan base.”

Canaan Sandy has been an Arkansas Razorbacks fan since he was two months old, when he first attended a game.  Entered in the competition by his mother Ginger, Canaan refers to himself as the “most dedicated fan the Hogs ever had.” He has the Razorbacks’ schedule memorized, travels four hours each way to see them play and has taught his entire church to “call the Hogs” – a traditional Razorbacks cheer.

Pierce Wallace, “The Georgia Joker” is a lifelong Georgia Bulldogs fan, who touts his recognizable bright green wig and painted face at every single Bulldogs football game – both home and away. Wallace is currently a freshman at University of Georgia, and can be found among members of Spike Squad, a group of intense UGA fans, in section 109 at football home games.

Every year, inductees are honored with their name engraved above three vintage stadium chairs located on ESPN’s main campus.

This year’s campaign was developed in collaboration with RED Interactive and 77 Ventures. Last year’s inductees included Vancouver Canucks fans and legendary Green Men, “Sully” and “Force,” Baltimore Ravens icon “Captain Dee-Fense” and the University of Alabama softball team’s Emily Pitek.
