World of X Games: Big Wave Hellmen Three-Part Series Starts September 21

Five Big Wave Surfers in Search of the World’s Biggest Waves on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC

World of X Games will debut Big Wave Hellmen – a three-episode series with five surfers seeking the biggest waves in the world starting Sunday, Sept.  21, with a one-hour preview of the series at 4 p.m. ET on ABC.  Later shows will debut on ESPN2 and will also be seen on ESPN and ABC.

The three one-hour programs will document the journey and competition of big wave surfers Mark Healey, Shane Dorian, Greg Long, Grant “Twig” Baker and Ryan Hipwood in their quest and the title of “Big Wave Hellman of the Year.”  Each surfer’s efforts will be judged by big wave legends Greg Noll and Mike Parsons, and accomplished surf journalist Chris Dixon, with scores determined by the height of each wave multiplied by degree of difficulty combined with execution.

Produced by Taublieb Films in conjunction with ESPN, Big Wave Hellmen was shot on location throughout Hawaii, California, Mexico, France, South Africa, Tahiti, Australia and in other international waters. From super storm Hercules that pounded the coast of Southern France, two days of flawless conditions at Jaws on Maui, an action-packed run at Northern California’s heaviest wave at the Maverick’s Invitational, to Long’s solo mission back to Cortes Bank in pursuit of the wave that almost took his life the year before, the series concludes at Puerto Escondido’s famous “Mexican Pipeline” in Playa Zicatela where the winner will be crowned in the final episode.

“If people take one thing from watching our show on World of X Games, I hope it is to find that same sense of inspiration in whatever they are passionate about – to step beyond comfort levels and embrace that sensation of fear,” said Greg Long. “The element of big wave surf is very simple – small guy, big wave, potential threatening consequences – which anyone can relate to. I’m so fortunate to make a career out of big wave surfing and the notoriety and coverage that this
