ESPNTennis: ATP World Tour Finals on ESPN2, ESPN3

  • Daily on ESPN3 November 15-22 from London; 10 Hours on ESPN2 November 19-22
  • Championship Live on ESPN2 Nov. 22

Three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic – who also won in 2008 – leads the elite field of eight at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals with weeklong coverage totaling 60 hours on ESPN3 starting Sunday, Nov. 15, with ESPN2 joining for 10 hours starting Thursday, Nov. 19, concluding with the championship live Sunday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m. ET. Patrick McEnroe, Darren Cahill and Brad Gilbert will call the action from The O2 in London. ESPN3 will also present the weeklong doubles competition, headlined by the legendary American twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan.

After winning three of the year’s four Majors, Djokovic has clinched the prestigious year-end No. 1 ranking. The remaining seven spots in the field:

  • Local favorite No.2 Andy Murray qualified for his eighth consecutive appearance
  • Six-time winner and three-time runner-up No.3 Roger Federer making his record-breaking 14th successive World Tour Finals appearance
  • French Open winner No.4 Stan Wawrinka reached the semifinals in his first two appearances the past two years in London
  • Two-time London finalist No.5 Rafael Nadal making his return to the World Tour Finals after withdrawing last year due to injury
  • 6 Tomas Berdych notched wins this season in Shenzhen and Stockholm
  • 7 David Ferrer making his 7th appearance after one of his best seasons this year, capturing five ATP titles
  • 8 Kei Nishikori making his second appearance after making history in his finals debut last year as the first Asian player to qualify

In doubles, the World No.1-ranked Bryan Brothers will be looking to bring home the World Tour doubles title for a fifth time, adding to titles in 2003-04, 2009 and 2014. The American twins secured their 14th consecutive appearance at the finals after winning the Rogers Cup in Montreal (their 35th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 trophy and 109th crown overall). Last year, they clinched the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Ranking for a record 10th time and for a fifth consecutive season. Like the singles, doubles matches start Sunday, Nov. 15, and conclude with the championship Sunday, Nov. 22 at 10:30 a.m. with all the action on ESPN3.

The eight players/doubles teams are divided into two groups.  All play round-robin matches against opponents in their group to determine a winner and runner-up from each group, who advance to the knockout stage of the tournament.  For the semifinals, the winner of Group A plays the runner-up of Group B and the winner of Group B plays the runner-up of Group A. Those two winners meet in the Championship.  All matches are best-of-three sets.

As I write this on 11-11-21, it's now 35 years for me at ESPN, the only real job I’ve ever had. I joined merely to help with the upcoming America’s Cup in Australia. I was told it would be for three months at all of $5.50 per hour. I like to say I simply kept showing up. I’ve worked on almost every sport, plus answered viewer calls and letters (people used to write!), given tours, written the company newsletter and once drove NASCAR’s Jeff Gordon to the local airport. My travels have been varied…I’ve been to Martinsville, Darlington, Indy and Super Bowls; the America’s Cup (all 3) in San Diego and College GameDay in the sport’s meccas such as Eugene, Auburn, Lubbock, Stillwater and more; the NBA Finals, Wimbledon (16 times and counting) and the “other Bristol,” the one with a race track in Tennessee. These days, my main areas are tennis, UFC, boxing, network-wide ratings (by month/quarter/year), and corporate communications documents, including fact sheets, chronologies, lists and nearly 35 of the Year in Review press releases. UPDATE EXACTLY ONE YEAR LATER: Today, November 11, 2022, I am retiring from ESPN -- 36 years to the day I began. As I ride off into the sunset – top down and E Street Radio blaring – I do so with so many wonderful memories, proud of my contributions and a heart full of gratitude for the opportunity.
